Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael, prepare for a new sibling. They find out that the new baby is going to be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sings to his sister in Mommy’s tummy.

The pregnancy progresses normally for Karen, an active member of the Panther Creek United Methodist Church in Morristown, Tennessee. Then the labor pains come. Every five minutes ... every minute. But Complications arise during delivery. Hours of labor. Would a C-section be required? Finally, Michael’s little sister is born. But she is in serious condition. With siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushes the infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The days inch by. The little girl gets worse. The pediatric specialist tells the parents, “There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst.” Karen and her husband contact a local cemetery about a burial plot. They have fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby — now they plan a funeral.

Michael, keeps begging his parents to let him see his sister, “I want to sing to her,” he says, but kids are never allowed in Intensive Care Unit. However, Karen makes up her mind. She will take Michael whether they like it or not.

If he doesn’t see his sister now, he may never see her alive. She dresses him in an oversized scrub suit and marches him into ICU. He looks like a walking laundry basket, but the head nurse recognizes him as a child and bellows, “Get that kid out of here now! No children are allowed.” The mother rises up strong in Karen, and the usually mild-mannered lady glares steel-eyed into the head nurse’s face, her lips a firm line. “He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!” Karen tows Michael to his sister’s bedside. He gazes at the tiny infant losing the battle to live. And he begins to sing. In the pure hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sings:

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray ... ”Instantly the baby girl responds. The pulse rate becomes calm and steady.

Keep on singing, Michael. “You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away...” The ragged, strained breathing becomes as smooth as a kitten’s purr.

Keep on singing, Michael. “The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamed I held you in my arms...” Michael’s little sister relaxes as rest, healing rest, seems to sweep over her.

Keep on singing, Michael. Tears conquer the face of the bossy head nurse. Karen glows. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

Funeral plans are scrapped. The next day — the very next day — the little girl is well enough to go home!

The medical staff just called it a miracle. Karen called it a miracle of God’s love!

Never give up on the people you love. Love is so incredibly powerful.

  24. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. Because Michael may never have chance to see his younger sister alive.

  B. Because Karen was driven mad at that time.

  D. Because Karen knew Michael would save his younger sister by his singing.

  26. Who saved the girl in the end?

  A. The baby B. Karen and her husband

  C. The pediatric specialist D. Her brother Michael

  27. What does the writer want to convey in the passage?

It is universally accepted that communication media and technologies have contributed to a society that is changing very rapidly. A key issue has arisen in the tide of this rapid change: individual privacy.

New communication and information technologies have enabled many organizations and people to collect, organize, and sell information about other people and organizations, both quickly and cheaply. The easy access to personal information makes banking, education, health care, and sales much more convenient for both consumers and sellers. Credit card system would be impossible without large databases of information available on demand. Scanners in the supermarket rapidly and accurately record every item that passes over them, making grocery checkouts(結(jié)賬) faster and error free. Companies keep huge mailing lists of customers that record not only their names, addresses, and phone numbers, but also major recent purchases, and demographic(人口統(tǒng)計的) information (such as sex, age, income, and educational level) that helps the companies identify target markets for specific products.

The negative side to all this shared information is that there is little control over who sees or uses this personal information. Medical records are shared not only by doctors’ offices and hospitals but are occasionally made available to insurance companies as well. Credit report errors occur often and can be very damaging to a person’s financial situation. Many people worry that having so much of their personal information available to so many others may hurt their privacy. Consumers report increasing concern over erosion of personal privacy even as they volunteer personal information in exchange for coupons(券) and gifts. After all, the possible consequence endangers the interests of their property rights, the right to work, even the right to life and so on. Then what kind of privacy future are we facing?

  28. The writer uses the example of “credit card system” in Paragraph 2 to show _____.

  A. new technologies make it very difficult to start credit card system

  B. people can’t get credit cards without checking out in supermarkets

  C. quantities of personal information are collected by organizations

  D. society changes rapidly because of easy access to people’s privacy

  29. We may learn from the passage that _____.

  A. supermarket checkouts make errors easily without credit cards

  B. new communication is based entirely on personal information

  C. the negative side of shared information endangers people’s privacy

  D. credit report errors only happen to those with financial problems

  30. The underlined word “erosion” probably means _____.

  A. loss B. comfort C. association D. defense

  31. What is likely to be talked about after the last paragraph?

  A. More uses of information technologies.

  B. Ways to protect the individual information.

  C. Engines to search for personal information.

  D. Demand of updating personal information.#p#副標題#e#

Against the supposition(假設(shè)) that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

  32. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may ___.

  A. result in a warming climate

  B. lead to a longer fire season

  C. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

  D. protect the forests and the environment there

  33. The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _____.

  A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere

  B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase

  C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space

  D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun

  34. The underlined phrase “soaked up” in the last paragraph most probably

  means _____.

  A. released B. absorbed C. created D. distributed

  35. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and

  Siberia may _____.

  A. warm the climate as the supposition goes

  B. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

  C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

  D. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

Do you know your uneasy adolescent might be experiencing teen depression? Of course. Teen depression isn’t just bad moods and occasional sadness—it’s a serious problem that affects every aspect of a teenager’s normal life. 36 But depression can be treated.

37 For example, teens can develop feelings of worthlessness over their school performance. And unsatisfied family life can have a major effect on how a teen feels. But whatever the cause, when friends or family don’t help to improve his or her sadness or sense of loneliness, there’s a good chance that he or she has teen depression.

There are certain signs when teenagers are suffering from teen depression. Often, kids with teen depression will have a noticeable change in their thinking and behavior.

38 Teenagers are likely to eat too much or not to eat enough for long periods of time, which should not be mistaken for an eating disorder.

When teenagers suffer from depression, they easily get annoyed or react badly to negative things. They may become aggressive as there is potential depression. 39

Making statements of despair is another sign. They have no hope for their studies, their life and their future. This is very serious since it is estimated that every year approximately 10 teenagers from every 100,000 commit suicide.

How is it treated? Here are methods, including medications and psychotherapy(藥物和心理療法) . 40 The depressed teens will also need support from teachers. Occasionally, hospitalization may be required for teenagers with severe depression.
